Chapter Sixteen

Ghost Town

“You did what?” Jessie clicked off the TV and sat up in bed. She looked at me like I had three heads.

“I said I’ve invited Rhonda and Nicole to go with us.” I slid an iron back and forth over my shirt, not daring to look at Jessie.

“What’s with the change of heart?”

“Maybe the Circle of Enlightenment workshop got to me.” That wasn’t a complete lie.

“Sounds like I missed some class.”

Jessie had suggested we check out Jerome, which was a ghost town about twenty-five miles outside of Sedona. I couldn’t really blame her for being shocked about inviting Rhonda and Nicole. It’s not like I’d been silent about expressing my opinion of those two, especially when it came to seductress Nicole. But that was before the Circle of Enlightenment…and before I saw Jessie naked. Maybe they’d act as a buffer between us, or at least distract me from visualizing Jessie’s wet, naked body.

“You never told me what crystal card you pulled.” Jessie yawned fiercely, like a lazy lion, before stretching her arms out and placing her hands behind her head. She closed her eyes, relaxing in her bed.

“Did you not sleep well?” Lord knows I didn’t after that peep show. I scanned Jessie’s tan, muscular legs to her breasts, which were straining against the words “Just Do It” written across her T-shirt. Gee, thanks for the visual, Nike. Let’s just say the slogan didn’t conjure images of Jessie running the LA marathon. Rather, it was more along the lines of a between-the-sheets sport.

Jessie’s eyes popped open, causing me to avert my gaze downward while rapidly ironing.

“I slept fine. Now what card did you pull?”

“The Apache tears crystal. It was about grieving the loss of something. I talked about Lizzie.”

“Ah, of course.” Jessie yawned again, closing her eyes.

“I know you weren’t feeling well that night, but it’s not fair I got stuck in the fiery circle of hell and you got off scot-free. We all had to bare our souls.”

Jessie opened her eyes, looking directly at me. “Ask me anything. I’ll bare my soul right now.”

The only question that popped into my mind was one I dared not ask. Did you really think our kiss was a mistake? Instead, I played it safe. “What’s your tattoo say?”

Jessie looked perplexed. “When did you―”

“Slide Rock. Little red bikini. Remember?” Not to mention the many times I checked her out in the gym when she bent over to pick up a dumbbell, but she didn’t need to know that.

“Right. It says YOLO.”

“What does that mean?

“Seriously? You’ve never heard that before? It stands for you only live once.”

“I thought you believed in reincarnation.” I unplugged the iron, standing it upright.

“I do, but that’s not the point of the tattoo. It reminds me to live in the moment, enjoy life, and take risks. Maybe you should get one.”

“Me? I don’t do tattoos.” I chuckled.

“Then crochet it on a pillow if you have to, but I think it would be a good message for you to remember.
